As the United States Supreme Court took up two Marriage Equality cases this week, CreagerCole Communications Co-Founders Cindi Creager and Rainie Cole got personal, discussing with WNBC (News 4 New York) what the cases mean to them as a married same-sex couple in New York.
United States v. Windsor challenges the constitutionality of Section 3 of the 1996 “Defense of Marriage Act” or (DOMA). Hollingsworth v. Perry, challenges the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the ballot measure in California that restricts marriage to opposite-sex couples.
Creager and Cole told News 4’s Roseanne Colletti they were eagerly watching the court cases and hoping for rulings that allow thousands of loving, committed same-sex couples like themselves to protect one another. It was important for this “Greenwich Village Duo” as Colletti called them, to take a moment away from their usual PR routine to go on camera themselves and speak out about the importance of marriage equality. Putting a human face on this issue is vital to changing public perception and ultimately the law.
